Winning audiences over with her girl-next-door looks, Sadhna in ‘Sapna Baabul Ka –Bidaai’, Sarah Khan has become the small screen’s sweetest lady. She talks about her journey from a small town to a glitzy world, her lucky break, her boyfriend and on her dream role with Amitabh Bachchan.
Oh! I never ever thought of being the part of the show. I had just completed my schooling and the production team approached me for the audition. I was surprised when I was offered the lead role in ‘Bidaai’. I was earlier selected Miss MP 2007 and did modeling for local channels in Madhya Pradesh. I have also worked as a host in DD Madhya Pradesh and other channels but this offer was hugely overwhelming. It’s not just the glamour but it’s very challenging as well.
Are you similar to the character you portray?
No, there is a different dimension to my personality than what’s on screen. The character Sadhna before her marriage in the serial is the real life Sarah Khan who lives in the present and who is always vivacious. I am not that quiet like Sadhna. I am extremely chirpy and naughty. I even have a boyfriend. I'm not that simple and submissive. And another refreshing contrast is that in real life I love wearing jeans, T-shirts and shorts. I cannot be wearing ethnic clothes and heavy jewellery all the time.
Can you recount your worst struggling phase?
I am very happy that the turning point in my career happened without much effort from my end. When it comes to struggle, I can say I've been lucky. There were no intense look tests or screen tests after the audition and I got a call to join the show just five days later. Leaving my parents for the first time is my only struggle so far. The only price I'm paying for my success is by staying away from them.
Can Sarah ever think of succumbing to social pressure to marry a man with special needs?
I can identify with the character on screen to a certain extent. I would definitely have done it. In the serial, I have sacrificed a lot for my family as an ideal daughter and even a wife. Though in my real life I am a total contrast to Sadhna of ‘Bidaai’, in an unfavourable situation, I will step into her shoes and do the same for my family. I will sacrifice my desires without any regrets to help my near and dear ones. I know it’s tough but I would have gone ahead if the matter revolved around my family. In a do-or-die situation I wouldn't have thought much and would have kept the just-go attitude.
What do you think has kept the show going?
The serial is doing well because of its simplicity and of course we act well (laughs). It has real emotions, thoughts, plus creativity that attracts viewers. It’s the story that counts and very captivating.
What is the visual image of a bride in your mind?
She must be committed to her partner and everything related to him. I give a lot of importance to family values. The bride must be supportive of her husband and not talk ill about the family. Ups and downs should be lived through together by the couple.
How do you and Parul Chauhan aka Ragini get along?
Apart from being co-stars we are best friends as well. We're both positive in our real as well as reel-life. We gel very well.
How important are looks for you?
I don’t say that looks are not important because it’s because of my looks that I got the break in the serial, but yes, it’s not everything. It’s God grace, blessings and love of well-wishers that matter. One’s dedication definitely helps him/her to prove their mettle. Besides, these there is luck and talent that always helps you achieve a lot.
How was it winning the favorite Patni award at the Star Parivaar Awards?
Winning ‘Best Patni’ award doesn’t mean that I have stood out the best. There are many actors who performed better than me. Again, I think it’s luck as well as hard work that fetched me results. The recognition has also boosted my confidence.
Who is your favorite actor and idol?
I want to create my own identity and name. I want my fans to know me as ‘Sarah Khan’. My favorite actor is undoubtedly Amitabh Bachchan. It’s my dream to work with him someday. I would love to play his daughter or be associated with him in any venture.
How do you deal with the work schedule? Is it too hectic?
Acting was always my ultimate goal. So I don’t mind working endlessly and giving hundred percent to my work. It’s very hectic but I still love my work and am passionate about it. I love to shoot and never get bored!
What do you do after pack up?
After long shooting shifts, when the unit packs-up, I spend two to three hours with my boyfriend, Ali Merchant. I want to see Ali at least once every day. I miss him while he is away but then that’s how it works between us. Despite my my packed schedule, I find time to meet him.
Hobbies and interests apart from acting?
I can’t live without dancing. Dance is an important part of my life. Dancing is my obsession, zeal and craze which I just can’t do without. I’ll try my luck in another season of Jhalak Dikhlaja. Amidst working, shooting and dancing my other indulgence is cooking. I really cook well. Ali loves ‘mere haath ka khana’ and it’s like a festival for him when I cook. He keeps licking his fingers when he eats my cooking. And not only Ali, once I impressed his father preparing butter-chicken for him which he praised a lot.
Freida, Dev Patel fuel dating
Slumdog Millionaire stars Dev Patel and Freida Pinto fuelled romance rumors when they were spotted going out for dinner.
However, the stars finally got time to eat out in Philly, reports The Sun .
Rumours of a relationship began shortly before Millionaire swept the board at the Oscars in February.
Freida and Patel denied they were an item, but their cover was blown by co-star Anil Kapoor. "When I meet them, I feel there is something happening," he said, adding that the couple shared "a magical chemistry".
Pinto's ex, Rohan Antao, also blamed Patel for their relationship breakdown.
"I don't know if they were having a sexual relationship but if I came face to face with him I would have things to say. Now everywhere I go I see them on billboards. I am devastated," he said.
It’s an awesome kind of pain: Priyanka

But that doesn’t mean that the girl delivers less for ‘What’s Your Rashee?” She instead is learning contemporary jazz, and describes it as ‘painful’.
She even danced for 22 hours – a special song which required her to be in 12 different get-ups. “But contemporary jazz,” Priyanka says, “is painful. Rehearsing for ‘What’s Your Rashee?’ is killing me! But it’s an awesome kind of pain! But I’m still wondering, how do they do it?”

It’s easy to forget that beauty and brains can co-exist in one
individual.
No wonder everyone who hears about it is surprised that Katrina Kaif can actually write very well and has penned what is finally going to appear as New York Diaries.
These diary entries contain her thoughts, observations and memories jotted down during the shooting of her film in Philadelphia. What started off as just random jottings has now shaped into a fine chronicle of a heart that beats for its art.
Initially, Katrina’s thoughts were meant to be serialised in a newspaper. But now, her producers have decided that her writing is too precious to be part of a daily. So, Katrina’s writings on New York will now appear in the form of a book.
Says her New York director Kabir Khan, “Katrina surprised me with her writing talent.”
But, Katrina is hesitant to acknowledge that her writings possess any literary value. “I like to write. It gives me a perspective on me and the world around me. We’re now looking for the correct pictures to illustrate the specific images in my diary entries.”
We also hear that Katrina is also secretly penning a script for herself. Earlier, it was Lara Dutta who wrote a script for herself.
Why Simi Garewal's role was cut out in 'Short Kut'?
'It's unfortunate but we had to let go of the sequence. This was done to keep the film's length in check. We wanted the film to be as close to the two-hour running length as possible. The film is now two hours and seven minutes and we didn't want to exceed it any further,' Anil Kapoor, the producer of 'Short Kut', told IANS.
The comedy has been directed by Neeraj Vora and is set to release July 10.
If the scene would have been retained, Simi would have made a comeback on the big screen after over two decades. She was last seen in her directorial debut 'Rukhsat' (1988) where she had Mithun Chakraborty and Anuradha Patel for company.
'The scene had turned out quite well actually,' said Arshad, who was expecting his 'rendezvous' with the graceful actress to be a hit among audiences.
'It was shot just like the way her shows are done with the white colour sets all intact. I had to act as this superstar actor Raju (the character which I play in the film) who gets this opportunity to make an appearance on her show.
'So there she is all sophisticated and elegant, while I behave as this cool star wearing those fancy, colourful and over the top clothes. The dialogues are really funny too as I start blabbering all that nonsense around how big
a fan I am of hers,' added Arshad.
Couldn't the scene have been retained?
'Well, some things can't be helped,' said Anil. 'Sometimes to make things perfect, you have to sacrifice some good things as well. Unfortunately, the Simi sequence is one of those good things.'
But the entire 'rendezvous' sequence has been retained to make it to the 'deleted scenes' section in the film's DVD and hence can be seen on the small screen.
'Yes, it will be there in the DVD. We can't let go off such a nice scene. It would make a good inclusion in the DVD and her fans won't be cheated,' said Anil.
Arshad added: 'Why just this scene -- there are so many other scenes that have turned out to be really marvellous but can't make it to the theatrical version. I'm sure if put together in a second DVD, they could all make for an altogether separate movie by itself.'
'Short Kut' also stars Akshaye Khanna and Amrita Rao, while Anil and Sanjay Dutt make special appearances for an item number.
Shah Rukh, Kajol creates trouble in U.S

With huge Indian population in the US, and Shahrukh being a popular face even amongst the non-Indians, it has become impossible for the shooting of My Name Is Khan to continue as scheduled. The situation has made acting even more tougher, as background sounds couldn’t be used with noises of Shahrukh and Kajol fans filling the streets.
Well, the cast and crew of My Name Is Khan have to bear some more gruelling days in the US, as the shooting is yet to complete. Karan Johar must be having tough time handling the situation and that too away from home!

Actress Katrina Kaif, who has made a mark in Bollywood with her stunning looks coupled with acting talent, says that she will never do a film for money.
The 24-year-old actress, whose earnings support her family of seven sisters, said there are times when she feels that she needs the money being offered to do a particular film.
"I am in a panic situation. But, If I succumb to such pressures, I know the audience will not respect me," Katrina told PTI in an interview.
The actress, who made her debut in Bollywood with box-office disaster Boom has not looked back since finding success with Akshay Kumar starrer Namaste London.
Looking back at her career Katrina says that she considers her journey so far as a learning experience.
"I went through a learning phase and I consider myself lucky to have learnt discipline from my co-stars Akshay Kumar, Govinda, Salman. They have helped me to strengthen my fundamentals," she said.
"But if you stagnate, the growth is over. I have done many comedy films. Success of films like Partner, Singh is Kinng gets you to a very wide audience reach. But for greater gains, you need to take greater gambles. If it works, you get respect and recognition," Katrina said.
Katrina is optimistic about her upcoming Yashraj film New York with John Abraham and Niel Nitin Mukesh, which is releasing on June 26.
"When I first asked director Kabir Khan about my character, he told me that Maya is like every girl... she is you without make up and costumes. I realised that he was telling me to be myself in the film," Katrina said.
"When I saw the film last week, I saw me. I can't be myself in every movie of mine. But when that happens, the film has to be special. I was taken aback at Kabir's grasp of the subject and story telling style," she said.
The actress feels that the audiences should not go with pre-conceived notions to watch New York.
"The film has all Indian emotions, but its narrative is very English movie style. New York may not be a typical masala entertainer, but has all the right ingredients to connect with the audiences," the actress said.
Katrina may have signed hard-core films like Rajniti and Ajab Prem Ki Gajab Kahani but she does not want to be part of preachy, art house movies because she believes that cinema is a medium to entertain.
The star feels that it is time for her to give 100 per cent priority to her career at present because she does not want to be complacent and disappoint her audiences.
"I am not working to earn a living, but I am living movies. I am finding me enjoying the process," she said.
'Aajab Prem ki Gajab Kahani' with Ranbir Kapoor will be her next release, followed by Akshay Kumar's De Dana Dhan.
"We will start shooting for Rajniti from August end. So far, we have shot the political portions in Bhopal," she added.

Bollywood star Akshay Kumar may sue a UK tabloid for slander against Shilpa Shetty and giving personal details of her past relationship with him.
After winning ‘Big Brother’ in the UK, the British media have suddenly taken a keen interest in Shilpa and her life and there have been several stories and articles published by various tabloids in the UK on her.

But a few days ago, a UK tabloid Newsoftheworld stooped to the lowest level, giving personal details of Shilpa’s past relationship with ex-boyfriend Akshay.
Although Shilpa has decided to keep a dignified silence on the issue, Akshay has decided to sue the tabloid.
Akshay is livid because the UK tabloid claims that he has given inside information about Shilpa and his past relationship.
The paper quotes a friend of the actor with whom he supposedly shared the stories as saying “I was the first to bed Shilpa” and “She made me wait before she let me sleep with her.”
The tabloid further goes on to give explicit details of Akshay and Shilpa’s personal relationship together.
Akshay though is disgusted with the UK tabloid’s article and says “I will never talk about a lady in those terms, this is totally baseless, I’ve never spoken to the said newspaper and I will seek legal recourse.”
Although Akshay is all set to take legal action against the tabloid and protect his ex-girlfriend’s reputation, Shilpa is adopting a different tactic, she says “I know that Akshay would never speak like that and these things are best laughed off.”

Mum is the word for Kareena Kapoor and the actress would go to any length to keep her mother happy. So she has decided to stay away from bikini scenes as her mother, yesteryear heroine Babita, didn't like her in a two-piece suit in 'Tashan'.
"No more bikini shots for me. I mean I'm very happy with the kind of attention and adulation I got for getting into a bikini in 'Tashan'. And I wasn't uncomfortable wearing it. Why should I be? I've the physique to carry it off. But that's it.
"My mother didn't like me in a bikini. Also the kind of work that I'm doing now in '3 Idiots' or Rensil D'Silva's film doesn't require that kind of exposure," Kareena told us.
With Kareena being extremely busy with her career and beau Saif Ali Khan, mom Babita has a lot of time on hand.
"She now does a lot of charity work with charitable institutions like the Mount Mary Old Age Home in Bandra and other places. She's a very giving woman. I should know. She sacrificed her own career and joys to bring up my sister and me," said the actress.
Not too many people know that Babita is half Christian.
"Her mother was a Christian and father a Sindhi. So we are as fond of the church as we're of the temple. Christmas is a big event for us," said Kareena.
Surprisingly, the actress is full of praise for her supposed archrival Priyanka Chopra.
"I don't know why so much is made of our rivalry. We're in totally different spaces. She does her own films. I do mine. Whenever we meet, she's really sweet to me. I don't understand why we're made out to be two squabbling sirens. Please, we're grown up women," said Kareena who has also kissed and made up with Aishwarya Rai.
As far as conducting a career goes, Kareena's role model is Aishwarya.
"I love the way she carries herself and the roles she's choosing after marriage. I'd like to follow that pattern when I get married," she said.
But that's a long way off. At the moment Kareena is just happy being with Saif.

There is a sequence in ‘Kites’ where the characters played by Hrithik and Barbara jump from a building. Director Anurag Basu decided to include a kiss between the two before they do the stunt. Though Hrithik gave Barbara a peck on her cheek, she asked for a smooch. But there was a reason behind it.
“We were both supposed to jump off from a rooftop at an impossible height. Before we did so our director Anurag Basu suggested to kiss Barbara, since we were doing something death-defying and dangerous and potentially lethal. I reached out and kissed her on the cheeks,” Hrithik is quoted as saying in a news report.
However, Barbara thought a peck on the cheeks would not look good enough in the scene.
“Barbara turned around to ask why I had kissed her on the cheek. ‘Given the same situation with your real-life wife, Suzanne, would you kiss her on the cheek?’ I was floored by her logic,” said Hrithik.
Then Hrithik did what was right. He kissed her on the lips.
“And this time I kissed her the way real-life couples would in the situation. On the lips,” said Hrithik.
Hrithik added that the kissing scene was done so tastefully, that he could watch it with his family and parents.
“In fact, I’d be more than happy and completely comfortable watching those kissing scenes with my wife, son and parents when the film is released,” Hrithik said.
Kareena Kapoor Back In IIFA Award
Kareena Kapoor was all geared up to attend this year's IIFA, but at the last moment she backed out! Reason? She wanted to spend some time with beau Saif Ali Khan. And the 'real' reason? Well, Bachchans were preferred over Bebo at the awards function.
And the result? Well, out nakhre wali Bebo decided to give IIFA a royal ignore.
Our queenie Kareena wanted to open and close the event with her performance, but it seems organisers had some other plans. They wanted the Bachchans to perform at least once, since Amitabh is the brand ambassador of the event.
